Months and 7 reviews later, here's my Comiket 89 recap! I think I've listened to more albums this comiket than any other before. That being said though, there weren't a significant amount of albums that I ended up liking. However, there were a couple of albums that really stood out to me this Comiket. [Alstroemeria Records] POP | CULTURE 5 - Ugh... Another mediocre album from ALR once again. I'd give it a listen once and that's about it. For me, there wasn't any noteworthy tracks as ALR continues to produce its more mainstream EDM. At the very least, their next album isn't another POP | CULTURE! Full review here. [Halozy] Bayside Beat - Not bad! Halozy continues its usual style with the mix of eurobeat, trance, and usual things from Asahi. Okay, Asahi's track wasn't so weird compared to his track from Viva Evolution. At the same time, it's not as interesting either. My favorite track goes to #4. My Dreamer, arranged by crouka and performed by misato (美里). [Yonder Voice] 雪幻ティルナノーグ - A short but very good album. YooSanHyakurei has a voice that I liked from the first listen. The tracks are nice and varied, filling in different genres. My favorite tracks go out to #4 and #5, arrangements of Fate of Sixty Years and Japanese Flower respectively. [xi-on] MAPLEAVES - xi-on's third jazz album, following Eyes and Scarlet. While MAPLEAVES is arranged in a similar style, the album as a whole didn't stand out to me as much as the previous. It's kind of strange considering that I'm usually very biased towards Mountain of Faith arrangements. Overall though, it's still a solid album that's worth listening to. [Asssaultdoor] Imitation Circus - I'll be honest and say that I don't remember too much from this album. However, I really liked track #7, an arrangement of Frozen Capital of Eternity. I'll probably revisit it sometime in the future though. [Lost Garden] Starlight Conductor - Ahh, I really wanted to like this album. It turned out to be more towards the relaxing side instead of the more upbeat sound that I liked from their last album, Bayside Dreamer. Tracks #5 and 7 by kaguraduki were pretty satisfying to listen to though. [EastNewSound] Innocent Abyss - This comiket, ENS actually managed to create a decent album. It's much more listenable than ALR's for sure, and goes back to some of the ENS root sound. Full review here. [Foxtail-Grass Studio] Re*Collection - Pretty standard fare from FGS, which means that it's definitely worth listening to. I'll have to re-listen to it more some other time cause I don't have much specifics to say about it. [foxfactory] 東方幻想界 -紺珠伝の音- - Yet another excellent album from Yuki Mizuhashi, featuring arrangements from Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom. I loved track #6 for its adventurous and very touhou-esque sound. [Pizuya's Cell] 共犯ストラテジー - Honestly, I skipped this album. Pizuya's isn't what it used to be, and their style has changed quite a bit over time. There's too much EDM elements for me to like. [Humming Life] アンサンブルカクテル - A relaxing album featuring Chata, a very well known singer for anime songs. [CROW'SCLAW] Angel's Wings - This album was a bit of a disappointment for me since it was so similar to Sepia Recollections. Overall if you ignore that, it turns into a fairly good album on its own. Full review here. [Release Hallucination] Melancholia - A 2 track EP, but very well worth the listen for those who like metal. I'm looking forward to hearing more from them, but that won't come until winter comiket at the very least. Full review here [Aiobahn & Yunomi] 枕元にゴースト - One of the cutest songs I've heard in a while. The first two remixes were excellent overall, and the single represents a few different styles. [Lilium Records] POPOVER+TEATIME - Cute songs? Electronic music? This album's got it. There's tons of variety in this album, so there's bound to be something that you'd end up like listening to. Full review here. [Shinigiwa Satellite] DEAD RISING - I may have said that this was Shinigiwa's first full album, but I was mistaken. This is actually their second one, but I believe it contains new tracks for the most. It's a great album for Shinigiwa or Meramipop fans. The sound quality is still terrible for the most part but it's overall listenable. [Elements Garden] Melty Sky -sprite PIANO Selection- - Melty Sky is a piano arrangement album consisting of arrangements from Koichoco and Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm. It's a lovely sounding album but too bad I can't relate to it. I'll have to revisit this album once I've read those two VNs. [Osamuraisan] Osamuraisan Selection vol.7 ~Bosa Lon~ - I've gushed over this album a lot in my review, so there's not much more to say about it. Its got some relaxing and upbeat bossa nova, with amazing vocals by Lon. Full review here. [AVTechNO!] Pulse - The first vocaloid album that I've reviewed turned out to be a really good one. The first track, Artery, is definitely the highlight in this EP. Full review here. Overall, this C89 was okay. My favorite album from this event is Osamuraisan's ~Bosa Lon~ by far, followed by foxfactory's. Foxfactory and FGS are always really consistent in their releases, so I can count on them being good. Alstroemeria continues to disappoint, but that didn't surprise me at all. Again though, they DO have something different coming up in their next album (I'll talk about it in my Reitaisai 13 post). EastNewSound was probably the most surprising this comiket, and managed to produce a decent album. Perhaps they've finally realized that they're capable of making better music.
Well that's all for now. I'd love to hear some thoughts on the C89 albums if you guys have any. If there's any really good albums that I may have missed, please let me know! There have been a couple of really good albums that I've discovered outside of C89, but those will have to wait til Reitaisai 13 is over! If you haven't checked out the previews for that, most of them can be found on this playlist here.
