Happy new year everyone!!!
Like last year, I'll be recapping and writing some mini reviews for the VNs, music, and games that I've played throughout the year. Despite all the things going around in the world and disappointments in my personal life, overall 2016 has been good to me.
Anyways, onto visual novels! Last year, I managed to finish 12 VNs and this year, I've finished a measly 7. I guess that's the price that I have to pay with a full time job now. With Root Letter and Sakura Christmas Party finished, I now have 48 VNs completed! Read on for my impressions of the 7 VNs from this year, in order of completion.

Happy Holidays everyone!
As promised, the C90 recap before C91! I was originally just going to keep this short but somehow I always end up writing more than I planned to. There always seem to be a few really good leftover albums that are uploaded way later after the event is over. Finding good albums is always a little bit difficult. Usually the album previews with Touhou artwork on them tend to be consistently more worthwhile while original albums tend to be hit or miss. Either way, this is a Touhou music blog so we'll focus more on the Touhou side of things! ;D. This Comiket's artwork was commissioned by me and done by ResiD (@medoart) once again. Check out her works here and follow her on twitter! The theme I requested this time around was the transition from Summer to Autumn, as that is what Summer Comiket usually means to me. It's always near the middle/end of August, which is really damn hot before it starts cooling off. So I requested a chibi of a sweating chibi Reimu, which was based on a sprite from Genius of Sappheiros, a Touhou spinoff RPG. I then needed a character to represent Autumn.. and I chose Momiji as she's usually represented in the theme, Fall of Fall. She just seems so ecstatic, doesn't she?! That's how I usually feel about Autumn as well. Finally... the background is of a forest which represents the transition between Summer and Autumn. I didn't give ResiD much direction in this, but she managed to make a very beautiful and fitting background. I love the usage of colors and lighting that contrasts the two seasons while blending them together in the middle. Thanks for the awesome art, ResiD! Anyways, back to music! Read on for album impressions and recommendations. Edit: I was just informed that Momiji's face is actually a japanese meme called Gyate Gyate. Now that I've finally settled into my work routine and figured out how to handle my personal time better, I've finally gotten the chance to finish this post up. It's long overdue and I apologize to the faithful readers who have been waiting for this!
Reitaisai 13 is long done but maybe there will be an album or two on this recap that you may have missed! I always strive to listen to albums from circles that I've never heard of before, as they are usually the ones that surprise me. That has certainly been the case with this Reitaisai. Before the album impressions though, I want to say thanks to @medoart for the art commission. I wanted a drawing of Satori because I've been really enjoying her theme lately and there was a pretty sweet arrangement of Third Eye in one of the R13 albums. If you've been reading my reviews, you'd know which one! [Frozen Starfall] - PROMISED DANCEFLOOR
Have you ever wondered what German vocals sound like? Most of you have probably never heard a song in German before, and definitely not a Touhou arrangement with German vocals.
Frozen Starfall (previously known as Babbe Music) is a German doujin circle that makes electronic touhou arrangements. Its sole arranger is Babbe, who draws inspiration for his arrangement from well known arrangers such as Masayoshi Minoshima, Syrufit, and Kirin. The other members of the circle consist of the vocalist Sasi, Lyricist H*M, and internal supporter Mai88. For more informational on Frozen Starfall, check out their website here. As for PROMISED DANCEFLOOR, it is Frozen Starfall's second album and the continuation of Babbe Music's DANCEFLOOR series. Babbe's inspiration for the series undoubtedly comes from Alstroemeria Record's (ALR) DANCEHALL series, and it's easy to see why. PROMISED DANCEFLOOR is what ALR's ULTRA DANCEHALL should have been. If you liked ALR"s older albums, especially ABANDONED DANCEHALL (ADH), then you must give this album a listen. Otherwise, it's an opportunity to listen to what I believe to be one of the best albums that Reitaisai 13 has to offer. So a friend gave me the idea to do a triple review of the three oldschool electronic touhou circles. Anyone who is into Touhou music has probably listened to something by these circles at least once. They have been around since 2003, 2008, and 2009 respectively, and have been consistently making albums since they've started. Each of these three circles have a very distinct style from each other, and I'm very glad that we have this kind of variety.
If you like EDM that mainly focuses on the drops, then Alstroemeria Records is the way to go. EastNewSound has some EDM but still retain their house and trance sound. Halozy has always been on the moe side and that hasn't changed. You'll usually find eurotrance, and upbeat stuff from them. The first album is Alstroemeria Record's ULTRA DANCEHALL. It's their 50th full album release and marks the return of the much missed DANCEHALL series. Unfortunately, the preview didn't give me much confidence in ALR's arrangements. Next up is EastNewSound's Blind Emotion. The preview only showcased three tracks from the album and left me wondering how the rest of the album would sound like. Last is Halozy's Lucky 7, which marks their 7th year as a doujin circle. The crossfade was very promising, so I had some high expectations of the full album. Read on for the full review of these three album! |
